A sound penetrates the depths of my subconscious.

A low moan, almost a hitch in breathing. I listen, not opening my eyes, floating in that space between sleep and wakefulness. Another cry. Someone is in pain? Who? The mattress shifts. I open my eyes to find his wing tucked over my naked form. No wonder I had slept so peacefully. How could I? I shove at the leathery expanse and he withdraws it at once. Huh?

He mumbles under his breath. Guttural words that ebb and flow the sentences short, snappy. I turn to face him.

Sweat beads his upper lip. His wings are tucked around him. Is he shielding himself? From whom? From that brute Dimitri? —who would be the one person I’d hate to be trapped with even more than Gabriel. Dimitri scares me to the core. The man is so far gone into his vampire self, nothing remains of the man he once was.

Gabriel, thrashes around, then kicks out and his leg grazes mine. The force of it is enough to shove my body back.

He thrashes his head from side to side. His hand grips the sheet next to him. The tendons of his throat flex and I swallow. That beautiful throat. The blood that thrums under the skin, the veins visible under the surface...all of it calls to me.

His head turns toward me, and I stiffen. His eyelashes are spiky and fan out over his cheekbones. The skin of his face is flushed. He seems younger, more innocent, than I have ever seen him. Is this how he looked as a boy?

Why was that so important to me? I don’t care how he was, or what happened to him when he was younger, right? So why does my heart beat faster? Why is there a thrumming in my chest? Why does the darkness inside of me sweep forward? I sit up. Watch him as he bucks and heaves, his shoulders dark against the pale blue of the sheets. Stare at his sculpted eight pack. Hell, who had an eight pack?

He twists his torso and a tattoo peeks out from his side. Huh? I tilt my head, follow the scrawls…words…no, they are names, etched into the skin across his side. How had I missed them?

Perhaps I hadn't noticed it because I had been too angry, too upset…too swallowed up by the strange reaction of my body to when he is around?

I trace my fingers over the letters. His muscles jump. I dart my gaze to his face, but his eyes stay closed. Whew. His breathing evens and my shoulders relax. I continue my perusal.
